Desmond Doss was a U.S. Army combat medic in World War II and a devout Seventh-day Adventist who, on religious grounds, refused to carry a weapon. During the ferocious Battle of Okinawa on the Maeda Escarpment ("Hacksaw Ridge"), he single-handedly saved an estimated 75 wounded soldiers by repeatedly venturing into heavy enemy fire to retrieve and lower them to safety. Doss's extraordinary, unarmed heroism earned him the Medal of Honor, making him the first conscientious objector to receive the award.
