Grand Theft Auto V features three playable protagonists and a prominent companion dog: Michael De Santa is a former successful bank robber living in witness protection in an affluent area of Los Santos, struggling with a dysfunctional family and a desire to return to his life of crime; Franklin Clinton is a young man from the ghetto looking to rise above his life as a repo man, who gets mentored by Michael; and Trevor Phillips is Michael's volatile, psychopathic former partner, a volatile drug dealer and gun runner who tracks Michael down after a jewellery heist. Chop is Lamar Davis's Rottweiler, who is later looked after by Franklin, and can be used to help locate items and people during missions.
