M. Bison was created after Akira Nishitani asked for an evil overlord with powers beyond mortal understanding to be in the story. M. Bison and his design were inspired by Washizaki "Eagle Cape", a villain from the manga and anime Riki-Oh; and Yasunori Kato, the antagonist from the fantasy film, Tokyo: The Last Megalopolis (aka Teito Monogatari, with his Street Fighter II portrait being identical to Washizaki. His shinguards are based off of the style used in the Universal Wrestling Federation of Japan during the mid 1980s.
