Rei Ayanami, the enigmatic "First Child" and pilot of Evangelion Unit-00, is a highly introverted, near-emotionless girl. She is a clone created by NERV, possessing the soul of the Second Angel, Lilith, and is a copy of pilot Shinji Ikari's mother, Yui. Rei is initially seen as disposable and loyal only to Commander Ikari, but through her interactions with Shinji, she slowly begins to develop self-awareness and human emotion.
